On January 7, 1839, and just two weeks and 12 days after South Australia was proclaimed, a group of savvy businessmen met to form the Adelaide Chamber of Commerce.
Since then, we have lobbied on behalf of our members, both State and Federal Governments without fear or favour, to ensure that the voice of business in South Australia is heard.
It began with the formation of the Adelaide Chamber of Commerce. In 1869, the South Australian Chamber of Manufactures was formed as a lobby and support group for the state's manufacturers. In 1889 the South Australian Employers' Federation formed.
In 1972 the Adelaide Chamber of Commerce and the South Australian Chamber of Manufactures merged to form the Chamber of Commerce and Industry SA Inc. A further merger on 1 November, 1993, between the Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the South Australian Employers' Federation, resulted in the establishment of the South Australian Employers' Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc.
On 29 May 2000, we launched Business SA, with a new name and a new image for the state's leading business and employer group.
In 2019 we will be celebrating 180 years of serving South Australian employers, and we’ll be holding events, further inductions into the Business SA Hall of Fame, competitions and more to ensure you’re involved.
Keep an eye out for our major event – a gala dinner celebrating 180 years in June – with details to be released early next year.
