Year of the Pig: Recognising the significance of South Australia’s trade partnership with China

Happy Chinese New Year – or Lunar New Year - to all, including our trading partners across South East Asia, near and far. If your business would benefit from better connections with our largest regional trading partners in the Year of the Pig, Business SA’s Export Ready Program, Export Growth China, Move Work Stay and translation services can help.

China is South Australia’s largest export and import market, taking a 20 per cent share of our exports and supplying 17.2 per cent of our imports, according to the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade 2017-18 financial year figures.

South Australia’s exports to China more than double those to the US, Malaysia, India and Japan. Last financial year, our major exports were alcoholic beverages, education-related travel, wheat, copper, copper ores and concentrate, meat, lead and vegetables.

Trade cooperation and relationships are critical to our state, particularly when you consider our major imports – our top three being refined petroleum, passenger cars and goods vehicles – which are essential for us to run effectively as a business community.

This year marks the Year of the Pig on the Chinese calendar. The Chinese believe pigs are a symbol of wealth. Their chubby faces and big ears are a sign of fortune. Pigs are also seen as realistic, and they are the opposite of all talk and no action.

We could learn from these characteristics and instead of talking up how we would like to grow our export markets, we should be taking a chance, stepping up and making an effort to create connections, improve our business planning and set realistic export goals across the region.
