The South Australian Business Chamber, South Australia’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry, is pleased with the result of the joint parliamentary committee inquiry into the merger of the University of Adelaide and the University of South Australia.

The South Australian Business Chamber has long supported the merger, detailing recommendations in its 9point plan to skyrocket SA (2020) and Charter22 For a more prosperous South Australia (2021). The South Australian Business Chamber reiterated its position in its submission to the committee in August and directly to the committee in its hearing on 4 September 2023.

Kendall Crowe, General Manager of Policy and Advocacy for the South Australian Business Chamber: I’m pleased the committee has confirmed the South Australian economy will benefit from the creation of Adelaide University. This aligns with our position and recognises the intrinsic value of business and higher education working together.”

It will also provide an exciting proposition for more international students, and also help keep our best and brightest here in South Australia.”

The South Australian Business Chamber’s submission covered potential benefits, including:

  • Increased international student enrolment
  • Eased skills and labour shortages
  • Improved research capacity
  • Increased research & development investment.

The South Australian Business Chamber will continue engaging with the government and business community on the merger and remains committed to continued close collaboration with all South Australian universities to strengthen ties between education and industry.
